12:30pm - San Francisco Latin Youth Ensemble
latin youth ensembleThe Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble (LJYE) of San Francisco is a performing group of talented musicians ages ten to 18. They perform Latin jazz classics and original compositions at a level that has landed them gigs at the San Jose Jazz Festival, the KCSM Jazz Festival, KGO Radio, Yerba Buena Gardens, SF Museum of Modern Art, Paramount's Great America and the world-renown jazz club, Yoshi’s. The LJYE has shared the stage with legendary performers such as the great Cuban bassist, Cachao; piano virtuoso Chuchito Valdes; Latin jazz heavyweights Poncho Sanchez and Clare Fischer; and the Grammy Award-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

2:30pm - Lo Cura
locuraDirect from San Francisco's vibrant music scene, this ensemble draws from the many genres that have strong traditions in the Bay Area, bringing them together into their own distinctive sound. LoCura’s music is strongly rooted in Flamenco, deepened through their time living in southern Spain and traveling in Morocco. But it is in the way LoCura mixes and moves in and out of other musical styles, like Reggae, Cuban Son, and Hip-Hop carried by the powerful performance and the soulful vocals of lead singer Kata, that results in an irresistible desire to move and be moved. In Spain the expression "Ida y Vuelta" is used to describe certain styles within Flamenco that made a "round-trip" from Spain to Latin America, mixing with music from the African slave and Indigenous populations. With this idea of music traveling and music as creative resistance, LoCura takes the trip back again mixing it up with their own Califas Flamenkito, Reggae, and Cuban Son styles. As the name implies, LoCura taps into the maelstrom of daily experiences to find that point where opposites meet and dance to convey the way different musical traditions can move so fluidly together. Moved by the music that crosses borders and takes root in different lands, LoCura draws from this creative 'rebelde' spirit to cultivate the cures passed on from our ancestors.

4:30pm - Cuban Cowboys
cuban cowboysQue es/What is un Cuban Cowboy?
The Cuban Cowboy is not a tipico cowboy in the mold of a cheesy-quesoso Hollywood Western. Horses? He has none. He (or she) sleeps on a mattress, rides a subway train, and owns no rifle. The Cuban Cowboy is a breed apart--a hy-breed. The tools of his trade are a musical instrument, a silvery tongue and a pair of twitchy hips. He is the bastard love-child of Ricky Ricardo and Tom Waits, Elvis eats azucar. The musical estilo of The Cuban Cowboys is as itinerant as the elusive creatures who spawn it. A capricious mixture of tradition and revolt, it features tasty rhythmitos of Montuno and Guajira served up under swooning surf guitar an
d dark post-punk power chords. An occasional hillbilly root thrown in the pot not only justifies the wearing of cowboy hats, but also makes an excellent garnish.

6:30pm - Latin Rhythm Boys
latin rhythm boysThe crisp and brilliant sound of the Puerto Rican 10-string guitar known as cuatro is featured by the jíbaro ensemble from Hayward, California called the Latin Rhythm Boys. Following in the traditions of their ancestors, this new generation of Puerto Rican musicians continues the legacy of producing jíbaro music (Puerto Rican country music) in order to stay in close proximity to their ancestral homeland's culture and customs. String virtuosos Ricky Castillo and Johnny Rodrigues share all the lead cuatro performances, while alternating simultaneously on the acoustic guitar and on backup vocals. Henry Miranda has the honor of being the group's lead vocalist (possessing a unique vocal timbre, which is essential in this music) with Larry Méndez handling bass duties. Completing the ensemble are percussionists and background vocalists Peter Rodrigues, Chato Peña, Tony Feliciano and Earl Miranda.
